One gloomy December morning a friendly face appeared at the door, beaming over a box of fresh groceries and greens. The box was overflowing with delicious produce: feathery carrot tops, cheery-looking rainbow chard and brilliant green broccoli florets were all peering over the sides. Placing my full-to-the-brim Farmers Support Box on the doorstep, my lovely delivery man jumped back in his van and set off to find his next Devon doorstep.
I struggled to get the package inside.
Its weight promised food in abundance. I unpacked and sorted the array of fresh fruit, vegetables, salads and local produce onto the kitchen counter. A feast for the eyes, you could almost taste these mouth-watering ingredients just by looking at them. I unearthed a brown paper bag filled with perfectly pink radishes and delved deeper to find long, healthy stems of beautiful purple kale. This box of discovery didn’t seem to have a bottom…
The Farmers Support Boxes – a new range for Veg in a Box – were thought up by Julie and her team to help support local growers and producers.
The boxes change from week to week depending on what’s in season and the freshest produce the farmers have that day. Everything is carefully packed in paper or compostable bags and there are thoughtful touches, like the sprig of rosemary I found (soon used to flavour a hearty tomato soup).
The meat comes from Veyseys, a Cullompton based butchers who name each and every pack with the local location it’s been sourced from. And the box doesn’t stop there. It also contains a pie, butter, cheese and not just any old jam, but Devon’s finest Boysenberry jam from Waterhouse Fayre.
This week has been a banquet of deliciously fresh, healthy meals.
I’ve made a lovely leek and potato soup and a warming beef stew (with most of its ingredients grown and reared just a few miles from my door). Some of the essentials, like lemons, might have come from further afield, but this box shows the abundance of produce we have on offer right here in Devon. I’ve discovered a variety of in-season fruit and veg that I wouldn’t have thought about buying from the supermarket.
During these cold, wintry days when home has become so important and my evening meal is the highlight of my day, this colourful collection of fresh ingredients truly brightened up my week. This year, as much as any year, it’s so important to make sure we’re eating local and supporting the people who grow and produce food around us. I can’t wait to tuck into my home-grown Devon roast…
